Name: Inquistor Cyril Lavellan Door: Right Canon: Dragon Age Inquisition Canon Point: 6 months after Trespasser Age: 26 Appearance: An image; Although I do want to add something very noticeable about his appearance - he is missing half of his left arm, from his elbow down. History: The history section here covers most of his childhood and the wiki page for the Inquisitor covers most of the events in the game. As far as Cyril's key choices this covers most of the important ones. Also, since it's bound to come up due to the nature of this game, he did not fully romance anyone - because that tends to get awkward - but he fell in love with a few of his companions and had some good times with The Iron Bull. Personality: Compassion - Cyril is capable of very strong compassion. This feeling is a major motivation for him. He agreed to be Inquisitor in part because he knew it would give him the ability to help people. When he makes choices it's often driven by a desire to help the downtrodden or find a compromise that avoids as much blood shed as possible. Even when someone does something that should make him hate them, he still tries to see things from their perspective. A good example of this is his treatment of Thom Rainier. When it came to light that one of his companions was actually a man hiding from a horrific past, he forgave the man all of his crimes. He did this because he could see how desperately Thom wanted to make up for his mistakes and he wanted to give the man a place where he could do that. This compassion doesn't make Cyril a total pushover though. When he needs to resort to violence he does, and he can play The Game with the best of them (for reasons described below), but in general, when he can he always wants to go with the nonviolent, most diplomatic option. His compassion is one of the reasons he's on such good terms with his companions too. He was even able to earn Vivienne's friends even though he strongly believes that mages should have control of their futures simply by doing everything he could to help those in need and being willing to listen to her point of view and consider it - even helping her out when he could. His desire to help people is a strong driving force for him, even if he tends to hide who he really is from them. Which leads us to the negative traits: Pretense - This is the word listed above, and with good reason. Cyril is always hiding, always pretending. Sometimes he hides and misdirects in battle, as stealth is something he's rather good at. Sometimes he hides by plastering his face with makeup, dressing in tailored clothes, and laughing away any sense of insecurity. He tries to misdirect to protect himself from getting hurt and often puts on a show of being a flirty, fun-loving guy all while feeling things deeply and intensely. He tries very hard to cover up how very uncertain of himself he is by putting on airs of a vain and superficial creature. Now, that doesn't mean he doesn't like luxury - he does (as described below) - but he does play up that affection to a pretty intense degree in order for people to think of him as vapid or foolish. This does mean that he turned out to be really skilled at The Game when needed, because people don't expect him, but it also serves to keep people at an arm's length. While he thinks this is a shield that he built around himself, it sometimes can really harm his interpersonal relationships. He is constantly wearing a mask and playing up his a flippant persona. There is a perfect example of what I mean in Dragon Age Inquisition. There is a part in the game where the Inquisitor ends up in the Fade. It's a traumatizing experience for everyone involved. After wards, Dorian checks in on the Inquisitor to see if they are all right. By this time, Cyril has completely fallen for Dorian and considers him a very good friend (but they aren't in a romance for reasons described below). When Dorian flat out asks if Cyril is okay, rather than taking that time to admit that he we traumatized by the experience, that being forced to choose who lived and who died was awful, or that he was going to have nightmares about the fear demon they had to fight there for years, he just closes up and says "I'm fine." Dorian bristles that this and disapproves because he know's it's a life. The thing is that Cyril is always like that. He is always fine. He is always have a good time. Life is always a party no matter what's happening. No matter how devastating the news he just received was, a moment later he's a-okay and if anyone tries to get him to admit to some damage, he'll just flirt with them or try to distract them with a joke or something shiny. He feels as if he has to always be on, because admitting to anything else is painful. He doesn't want to seem weak or ruined in any way. This also leads to his next major flaw, which is a strong partner to his pretense but also kind of it's own debilitating category: Emotional Constipation - Cyril is terrified of expressing his true emotions to people. He tends to cover up anything that might be considered negative with humor and always tried to appear as if he is approaching difficult topics stoically. A good example of this is found in the Trespasser DLC - as the anchor is painfully destroying Cyril's body rather than give in to the urge to be angry or cry, he responds by taking a breath and focusing on developing a plan to deal with an external threat. He doesn't do well when he's forced to be honest with people and will often do anything he can to avoid doing that. He doesn't like to appear weak or damaged - even though he feels as if he is both. This also exhibits itself as an intense fear of romantic intimacy. While Cyril really shines at platonic connection and thrives on sexual attention, he is completely and utterly terrified of falling in love. That doesn't mean that he can stop it from happening - he's fallen in love more times than he likes to admit - but when it does he tends to run from it. He fell in love with Merrick, and was so disgusted by himself for it that he took the first chance his Keeper gave him to leave the Clan. He fell in love with Dorian, and he planted himself in the friend zone and stubbornly stayed there. He fell in love with Bull, and then chickened out of giving him a dragon tooth - something that would express that love - at the very last second. There are times the universe provides him with a chance to open his heart to someone and he responds by clamping it closed and adding a few more locks for good measure. That said, he is always dtf though, which is another important thing to point out: Hedonism - As stated before, Cyril really thrives on sex. He is extremely open with his own desire to have as much of it as possible. He also really loves the finer things in life like good food and luxurious fabrics. This is a trait one doesn't often see in a Dalish elf, as they are known for being more down to earth and rugged, but this is a trait he's had even when he was with his Clan. It contributed greatly to his restlessness and desire to be around humans. This is one of the reasons the Keeper had sent him to the Conclave on the first place - probably hoping he could get it out of his system and move on with his life. When he became Inquisitor he was able to indulge by sleeping with people like The Iron Bull and embracing the position to gain access to more luxury. This helped him in his relationship with people like Josephine and Vivienne who believed he needed to maintain a certain look to do well in his role. He was always delighted by things like regular baths, the room they made for him as Inquisitor, and tiny little cakes at parties. He flirted with basically every handsome man he could and even some women occasionally. Consent is still an important component of this, however. If someone expressed discomfort at the flirtation or asked him to stop, he would drop it. That said, if they seemed receptive and there was no worry about it turning into something with more feelings, he is always willing to indulge. Powers and Abilities: Cyril is a rogue in the Dragon Age world. His weapon of choice is the bow but he has some knowledge of how to fight with daggers. He can also use a crossbow. He's pretty good at distance and stealth kills. He is the type to assess a battle, sneak up to the high ground, and then use that leverage to shoot at his enemies. Either that or he'll use his stealth skills to set traps around the battle that enemies can stumble into. He is an Artificer by specialization. As a skilled craftsman, Cyril can create and use traps and intricate devices to be used during battle. He also has a mind for traps and devices in general and invents little things to make the world easier and better. While with his clan he did things like build new water filtration devices and now that he doesn't have an arm he uses those same skills to make new prosthetic arms that he can use to fight - including one with a crossbow attachment. He also made toys for children in his Clan and stimming tools for Merrick including puzzle boxes. Cyril has a pretty charming personality and has experience as a skilled politician. He has the desire to seek compromise but can also focus and make important choices when needed. He has good interpersonal skills but can still lie through his teeth to ensure that he hides information. He can schmooze with the best of them. While this is no longer an ability he actively has control over, it is also important to note that he still has a bit of Fen'Harel's magic in him. The center of it has been removed with his arm, but the magic still touched him and still hurts him. It will eventually kill him - it's just doing it very slowly. While he personally does not have access to this magic anymore and cannot weld it, someone with magical ability might be able to draw on it. This is something that would have to be worked out if it came up in game. Inventory: - The sending crystal Dorian gave him. It won't work as intended here, though, so it will basically be a pretty necklace which he will wear as often as he's allowed. It looks like this. - His Red Jenny token. You can see what these look like in this part of the scene where Sera makes the Inquisitor a Red Jenny. The tokens are the red/gold things that people are tossing on the table in front of him. - His Artificer percision toolkit, which he made by hand once he chose to officially be an Artificer. The information about that can be found here. Samples: TDM Link 1 - This is his top level on the meme and shows a pretty good idea of how he feels about the game's setting in general. You can see Pretense on display here as he pretends everything is a-okay. Within those threads if you pay attention to his interactions with Hakkyuu you can also see his hedonism on stark display. Please be aware that Hakkyuu interaction is NSFW. TDM Link 2 - This is his conversation with Anders which gives you a good idea of his voice and how he tends to hide his own anxiety/fear behind jokes and flirting. |
